Adding to the list of differences between men and women: Scientists now say that women need more sleep than men because their brains are more complex.
According to researchers at Loughborough University Sleep Research Center in England, women’s brains are wired differently so their need for sleep is slightly greater. They also tend to multi-task more than men, meaning they use a greater amount of their brain.
The researchers also noted that poor or disruptive sleep effects women more so than it does men. For women poor sleep is associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression and anger.
Those feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men. Experts generally recommend that all adults aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night.
