Days after the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, a hospital in Denver has released a study saying that deaths from gunshot wounds at its trauma center have increased over the past decade, with gunshot injuries becoming more severe.

The researchers say despite the study relying on data from one hospital, it represents a trend doctors elsewhere have reported anecdotally. The data analyzed information on gunshot wounds treated at Denver Health Medical Center from 2000 to 2013.

Death rates for gunshot wounds increased during the study period by about six percent on average every two-year period.

The risk of having a severe gunshot injury also increased by 6.5 percent for every two year period, and the risk of a patient having more than two severe wounds increased by about five percent.

One study author said that firearms are becoming more harmful and more lethal.
