For one 12-year-old girl, Christmas came early as one special present has given her the gift of vision.
The Pennsylvania girl has Stargardt’s disease, a rare genetic eye disorder that has taken a way her central vision and allows her to only see peripherally. According to the National Institutes of Health, an estimated one-in-8,000 to 10,000 people have the disorder of the retina.
Her present, a pair of e-sight glasses, uses technology to capture, enhance and display real-time video that allows individuals with low vision and legal blindness to see. The device has HD screens that magnify the details she cannot see.
The first person the girl saw when she tried on the new glasses was her mother.
When asked what she was most excited to see, she said watching her brothers play basketball and her friends playing. She has already determined that this will be her best Christmas ever.
