FDA Clarifies ‘Gluten-Free’ Food
The FDA is clarifying the rules on just how much gluten would be allowed in food packages labeled gluten-free.
FOX News Radio’s Dave Anthony reports:
People who don’t eat gluten are getting some help from the FDA; defining the maximum amount that can be in food labeled ‘gluten-free’. Less than 20 parts per million. Until now, manufacturers could use their own discretion in how much. This is important for the up to three million Americans who are celiacs and cannot digest wheat, rye, barley or similar ingredients; getting abdominal pain and diarrhea and/or weight loss, fatigue and rashes. FDA officials say just about everyone can consume the tiny amount of gluten that would be allowed in those labeled packages.
