The Speaker’s Lobby: Partial Government Shutdown Looms

11/21/2018

Chad Pergram discusses the possibility of a partial government shutdown.

I’m Chad Pergram with the Speaker’s Lobby.

There could be a partial government shutdown in December..over President Trump’s push for a border wall.

Congress and the President have approved five of the 12 annual spending bills which fund the government. But among the seven outstanding measures is a package for the Department of Homeland Security. That’s the domain of the border wall. The President wants full border wall funding. Democrats are willing to spend some money for border “security.” But not give President Trump what he wants.

A senior Senate Republican source tells Fox that they are trying to get “as much wall money as possible. There is no path to getting all seven bills otherwise.”

Some Republicans want to go to the mat over the wall and force a shutdown if Democrats don’t blink. The lame duck session will be the last time Republicans have the House, the Senate and the presidency for two years once Democrats take command of the House in January.

An interim spending bill..just avoiding a shutdown until early January..could be the worst case scenario for House Democrats. That’s because they’d have to focus first on funding the government..and not probing alleged misdeeds by the Trump Administration.
