Many commentators have mentioned that half of the American people pay no tax at all. What I haven't heard is that not only do a large number not pay taxes but receive a sometimes significant refund in the form of the Earned Income credit and other refundable credits.
I am a seasonal tax preparer and over half of my clients paid no tax and received huge refunds. One client with 4 children and an income of $28,000 paid no tax and received a refund of $11,000. He got all of his withholding back, $3000 in additional child tax credit and the balance was from the Earned Income Credit for 2 eligible children.
I paid $7000 in income tax on retirement income and my tax was not enough to cover the refund this person got. We wonder why we are in a deficit crisis! Everyone shold have some skin in the game. If we are going to give Federal welfare to low income families it should be called "welfare" not an Earned Income Credit.
