Senate Axes FBI Investigation Expansion

A measure to expand the FBI’s reach into telephone and internet records is narrowly defeated in the Senate.

FOX’s Jared Halpern has more from Capitol Hill:

A Republican backed measure that would have allowed the FBI to obtain so-called digital fingerprints, without a warrant, fell a vote short of a 60 vote threshold needed to clear a procedural hurdle.

Supporters say FBI director James Comey had asked for the new authority to better investigate foreign terror groups. Civil liberty groups complained the measure would give police access to email, text messages and internet browsing histories without a court order.
