Mom with Zika Gives Birth in U.S.

A baby at a New Jersey hospital has been born with a birth defect linked to the Zika virus.

FOX’s Tonya J. Powers has more:

The baby girl is at Hackensack University Medical Center, born to a 31-year-old woman from Honduras. A high-risk team decided to deliver her more than a month prematurely and the OBGYN chief at the hospital says she’s not doing well.

An ultrasound on Friday confirmed the baby had birth defects, including low birth weight and microcephaly. Dr. Peter Wagner with nearby Saint Peter’s Hospital, says it could result in severe developmental problems:

(Dr. Wagner) “Could be intellectual problems, could be problems with sight, hearing, movement.”

Doctors say the mother contracted the Zika virus from a mosquito bite in Honduras. The baby is the second one born in the U.S. with Zika.
