Students Sue Providence for Placing Ban on Renting a Home Together

A city of more than 40,000 college and university students sued for telling them where they can live.

    FOX’s Lilian Woo reports:

Providence, Rhode Island, hit with a lawsuit over an ordinance that bans landlords from renting out single family homes to more than three college students at a time.

Four Johnson and Wales University students joining in the suit filed by their landlord and backed by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The suit calls the legislation an unconstitutional intrusion into students’ rights to choose who they live with, and landlords’ rights to choose who they rent to.

The city council passed the rule in September after complaints about out-of-control partying by students in some neighborhoods.

Two universities in Minnesota have also enacted housing laws.
