Overcrowded Federal Prisons
A congressional panel recommends ways to reduce crowding at federal prisons.
FOX’s Chris Foster reports:
Overhauling mandatory minimum sentences using probation instead of prison time for low-level offenders and prosecuting fewer cases at the federal level.
Those recommendations from a task force formed by Congress. It says doing all this would reduce the federal prison population by 60,000 within eight years, saving billions of dollars.
There are more than 196,000 convicts in federal custody now.
