Scientists Working on New Enzyme That Can Stop Toxic Effects of Sugar
A scientific discovery offers new hope for obesity treatment.
FOX’s Lilian Woo reports:
There’s a possibility one day those New Year’s diet resolutions could be a thing of the past.
Scientists at the University of Montreal Hospital Research Center say they have discovered an enzyme that can help stop the toxic effects of sugar on some organs.
The study published in the Journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences finds that g3pp, Glycerol-3-Phosphate Phosphatase, plays a central role in controlling glucose and how our body uses fat, essentially preventing excessive sugar from over-accumulating in and causing damage to cells.
The enzyme is present in all mammals and researchers are working to find ways to cause the body to produce more of it.
This discovery could also help stop people from developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
