Legal Rights For Chimpanzees?
A New York court order, some say, equated chimpanzees with people — has now been amended.
FOX News Radio’s Tonya J. Powers has details.
The case involves two chimps at Stony Brook University on Long Island, and a group that wants them released to live in a Florida sanctuary.
A Manhattan judge had issued a writ of habeas corpus in the case, which is only given to people, leading many to believe the judge was making a statement on the status of the animals as people.
Now, the order has been amended, with the words “writ of habeas corpus” taken out… Suggesting that the court has made no decision on whether Hercules and Leo deserve to be treated as legal persons.
A May 6th court date has been set for another hearing in the case.
