12-year-old Carrying BB Gun, Shot & Killed By Police

A 12-year-old boy is shot and killed by police in Ohio, and locals are asking…why?

Reporter Kathy Davis with FOX Radio affiliate WTAM has details, from Cleveland.

Cleveland police are reviewing video from outside the Cuddell Rec Center, where officers shot and killed a 12-year-old boy, after police mistook his BB gun for a real pistol. Deputy Chief Ed Tomba says Tamir Rice’s death is tragic.

(Tomba) “The officers ordered him to stop and to show his hands, and he went into his waistband and pulled out the weapon.”

Rice’s father Gregory Henderson wonders why police didn’t use a stun gun instead.

(Henderson) “But, the situation hurts. Who would’ve thought he’d go so soon? He didn’t even live a whole life yet. And for him to be 12-years-old, he don’t know what he’s doing. You understand me? And, the police, they know what they doing.”

The officers are on administrative leave.

A 12-year-old boy in Ohio, shot and killed by a Cleveland police officer over the weekend, after reaching into his waistband for a BB gun. The boy’s family now demanding answers and a thorough investigation.

Confusion and sadness as people remember Tamir Rice — Sunday. Many in the West Boulevard neighborhood dropped off teddy bears and candles for the 12-year-old. He died after Saturday afternoon’s police involved shooting at the playground behind the Cleveland Cuddell Rec Center.  

A 9-11 caller told police Rice was waving a gun around and pointing it at people. Two Cleveland officers responded in a marked vehicle.

Cleveland Police Patrolman’s Association President Jeff Follmer says, Rice had taken the weapon off of a picnic table and put it in his waist band. The BB gun that resembles a semi automatic pistol — it was missing its orange safety indicator. The boy reached for his weapon. Two shots were fired, and Rice was hit in the abdomen.
