Bin Laden’s Son-in-Law Convicted At NYC Terror Trial

Usama bin Laden’s son-in-law, Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, was convicted Wednesday at a New York City terror trial.

A federal jury here in New York City has convicted al Qaeda spokesman Sulaiman Abu Ghaith. The jury deliberated since just before lunch time yesterday, that’s when the judge gave them the charges for the case. Abu Ghaith was accused of conspiring to kill Americans. A religious teacher from Kuwait, he was chosen by Usama bin Laden to recruit more fighters for al Qaeda following the attacks of September 11, 2001. He is married to bin Laden’s oldest daughter. The jury, made up of nine women and three men, was read instructions and given that case for deliberation yesterday morning around 11:45am ET. Before deliberations restarted today, U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan gave the jurors a little nudge as they consider the fate of Abu Ghaith, saying that they may be instructed to stay late if they hadn’t reached a verdict by the end of the day today. During closing arguments, Assistant U.S. Attorney John Cronin told jurors that bin Laden asked Abu Ghaith on the evening of 9/11, on the evening of those attacks, to make videos that would help recruit more men from around the world to be suicide terrorists for al Qaeda in its war with America. Abu Ghaith’s lawyer says his client was not guilty and there’s zero evidence that he knew about the conspiracies the U.S. government claimed he knew about. Abu Ghaith is the highest ranking al Qaeda figure to face trial on American soil since September 11th.
