Healthy Makeover For School Snacks
New standards for school snacks have been unveiled as part of the government’s effort to fight childhood obesity.
FOX News Radio’s Lisa Brady reports:
A soda and some nachos woudn’t be an option for schoolkids anymore under new rules proposed by the Agriculture Department. Part of ongoing changes required by Congress in a 2010 Child Nutrition Law. The proposed limits on fat, sugar, calorie and sodium content would expand the rules that started last fall for subsidized breakfast and lunch.
Now, nearly all candy and high calorie drinks would be banned from school vending machines, along with fatty a la carte options in the lunch line. Fundraisers and bake sales would be exempt, left up to the states.
