FOX on Tech: World Cup Breaks Twitter Records

Sunday’s Women’s World Cup soccer final broke a record on Twitter.

With millions of people around the world watching on television, here on ESPN…

“It’s a bit of gamesmanship…It is Japan’s World Cup!”

…and Japan winning in a shootout, the Women’s World Cup Final had fans all over their smart-phones and computers talking about it: 7,196 tweets per second at the end, according to Twitter’s official numbers.

That breaks a record set at midnight, Japan time, this past New Year’s Day.

Note: The new record was almost broken less than an hour later, when another soccer game between Brazil and Paraguay ended in a shootout – that match drew 7,166 tweets per second.  The New Year’s Day tweet record was 6,939 tweets per second.
