New Concerns Arise about Zika Virus

The threat of sexually-transmitted Zika in south Florida may not be fully abated, as health officials warn women seeking reproductive care to consult clinicians about the risks of using donated semen.

FOX’s Eben Brown reports from Miami:

The Centers for Disease Control last removed the warnings of active mosquito Zika transmission in December. But now the federal health agency is concerned that semen donated to fertility clinics in South Florida during last summer could be problematic, and women need to be careful if planning on using such treatments:

(Dr. Jamieson) “And some of the semen that was collected and stored may still be at risk for transmitting Zika virus.”

Doctor Denise Jamieson at the CDC says there is no test to screen semen for Zika virus, the way blood or other donated materials can be checked. CDC says fertility clinics from Miami to West Palm Beach could be affected.
