Internet Pioneer Submits Open Letter of What He Fears about His Creation
Wishing a Happy Birthday to the internet!
FOX’s Brett Larson reports:
Another year, another birthday for one of our most used technologies…
On March 12, 1989 Tim Berners-Lee, then just a computer scientist, submitted a proposal for an interconnected system of computers and information that would become the world wide web.
28 years later, he’s written an open letter detailing the risks the web faces to “fulfill its true potential as a tool which serves all humanity.”
One risk, we’ve been hearing a lot about since the election, fake news. Berners-Lee said that fake news would allow anyone with some data science and an army of bots with bad intentions can game the system.
Also something we’ve been hearing a lot: Losing control of your personal data. In fact, beyond the amount of data we surrender when we sign up for various services, in countries with authoritarian regimes, collaborating between companies and government can put people’s lives at risk.
And Berners-Lee is worried about democracy because of all those things combined.
