Pro Athletes Push to Keep Workers Comp

The Chicago Bears and NFL Players Association are working with the Illinois legislature this week, trying to end a two-year state budget impasse over workers compensation payments to pro athletes.
Currently, players can claim up to $65,000 a year in payments until they turn 67, just like any other worker.
The Bears, with the support of the Bulls, Blackhawks, Cubs and White Sox, are proposing ending payments to athletes at age 35 or five years after the injury, whichever comes first.
The NFL Players Association, however, argues that the current rule protects minor-league and practice squad players, who don’t bring home huge salaries.
In 2013, California passed a measure banning out-of-state players from filing for workers comp there.
