No Buzzing Around! One Bumblebee is Close to Extinction
For the first time a species of bee is being labeled as endangered.
FOX’s Lisa Lacerra reports:
It was once common in the east and upper Midwest, but now the Rusty Patched Bumblebee is on the verge of extinction, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
It’s suffered a dramatic population decline over the past 20 years with only scattered populations remaining in 13 states and one Canadian Province. This species among many that have seen a decline around the world.
Scientists say the causes may include diseases, pesticides, habitat loss and climate change. Bees and other insects provide a service worth billions of dollars by pollinating crops and supporting the growth of flowers and wild plants.
