Cincinnati Zoo’s Gorilla Barrier Didn’t Meet Proper Standards
The federal investigation of a gorilla exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo is complete.

The barrier separating the public from the gorillas was not in compliance with standards for operating primates. That’s the finding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The report obtained by the Associated Press also said the zoo’s dangerous animal response team properly followed procedures when a child fell in the enclosure in May and was dragged by the gorilla named Harambe:
“Mommy’s right here. Mommy’s right here… Tiffany! Oh my God!”
A zoo team member determined the three-year-old was in life threatening danger and shot and killed the 17-year-old Western Lowland gorilla, which led to a storm of criticism around the world from animal rights activists.
The child recovered without major injury. The zoo has since made the barrier taller and added nylon mesh and surveillance cameras.
