Don’t Let the Ghost of Past Relationships Ruin Your New One
We’ve all had them, ex’s. Some good and some bad, but the best way to start fresh in your new relationship is to be honest and know when the time is right.
FOX’s Ashley Papa has this week’s “FOX on Love”:
One of the most sensitive issues that’s going to come up with a new love interest is past relationships, who they loved, who you almost married, who broke their heart.
Licensed marriage and couples therapist, Dr. Paul Hokemeyer, has tips to get us through this sometimes tricky conversation.
First, you must be comfortable sharing your past and knowing theirs:
(Dr. Hokemeyer) “I think all you really need to convey is a general survey of the terrain and again if you’re uncomfortable with your truth, there is a reason why and you need to sort that out.”
Hokemeyer says don’t interrogate your new flame, be open about hearing what they have to say. If they reveal something that may shock or upset you, Hokemeyer says don’t overreact:
(Dr. Hokemeyer) “Just remember that time heals everything and time will enable us to make rational decisions rather than impulsive, emotional decisions about our partner.”
Everyone’s relationship past is different, but it often helps shape us into the partner we’re suppose to be.
With FOX on Love, I’m Ashley Papa.
