Livin’ on a Prayer: NJ’s Hopes of Legalized Sports Betting Struck Down
New Jersey’s attempt to legalize sports betting is struck down in federal court.
FOX’s Dave Anthony reports:
New Jersey took a gamble and lost. A U.S. appeals court rejected on Tuesday the state’s attempt to get around a federal ban and legalize sports betting.
The 2014 New Jersey law would have allowed the wagering at casinos and racetracks, but the four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA sued the state, claiming it would damage the integrity of their games.
The appeals judges ruled New Jersey’s law violates a 1992 federal law that only allows betting on individual games in Nevada, while Delaware can offer multi-game parlay betting.
New Jersey’s only shot left is an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
