In response to the mental health crisis America’s youth are facing, many have rightfully pointed towards social media as the main negative factor; however, trauma and abuse are big variables for mental health as well. A CDC survey found that 1 in 5 high school girls is a victim of sexual abuse, and now an online-based type of sexual abuse is increasing at a concerning rate: sextortion. Sextortion occurs when a victim’s explicit or sensitive content is used to blackmail them for money or additional explicit content. Gavin Portnoy, vice president of communications at the Nation Center for Missing and Exploited Children, says this issue has become widespread and needs more awareness.
