Judge Rules In Monkey Selfie Case

A monkey that took a “selfie” photograph does not legally own it.

More on the case from Fox’s Chris Foster:

Naruto is a six-year-old macaque monkey living at a reserve in Indonesia.

He grabbed a camera owned by the British nature photographer David Slater… And took a picture of himself, smiling, in 2011.

Slater copyrighted the picture, published it a book, and it’s been seen all over the world.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals animal rights group sued on Naruto’s behalf, arguing he owns the copyright and should benefit from all profits.

A federal judge in San Francisco rules though, while copyright law could be extended to animals, for now, there is no indication that it does.
