Navy Football Set to Pay Tribute to Historic Ships in Game Against Army

Players for the Navy football team are getting a new look just in time for the Army-Navy game this month.

FOX’s Tonya J. Powers has more:

The uniform pays homage to seven of the historic ships that make up the U.S. Naval Fleet… Each ship is featured on one of seven hand-painted helmets that players will wear, assigned by position.

Helmets worn by the linemen have amphibious assault ships, special teams players have the minesweeper, and the one worn by the quarterback features the aircraft carrier.

It’s the first time ever for a college team to have different helmets. The uniform font replicates the one used on Navy ships, and the pants feature the Marine Corps logo.

The rally cry “damn the torpedoes” is featured on the jersey, pants, and inside players’ gloves as a nod to Admiral Farragut’s historic naval victory at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864.
