Three-out-of-ten moms with kids under 18 stay home for at least some of that time. That’s an increase since the recession hit. And as of 2012, 6% of stay-at-home moms couldn’t find work.
The challenges include that gap in your resume while taking care of your kids, the lost years of experience, and changes in technology and the nature of your career field.
So here are some tips for stay-at-home moms: Stay current in your field. Read up on changing trends. Take an evening class, if possible. And most importantly, don’t lose touch with your professional network. When it’s time for you to jump back into the workforce, that network is crucial. Hand the kids over to dad or the grandparents, and go to lunch with former colleagues. Let them bring you up to date, so when you’re ready to return to work, you’re really ready.
