Democrats tried stalling, but Texas House Republicans have passed some of the toughest abortion proposals in the land. The bill would ban the procedure after the 20th week of pregnancy. It also requires doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and limits abortions to surgical centers. Supporters say it’s a plus for women’s health care; those against counter it would shutter 37 out of 42 abortion clinics state-wide. The bill heads to the state Senate next. Democrats say they’ll filibuster to keep the bill from reaching Governor Perry.

Editor’s Note: The bill must sit for 24 hours, and then the Senate will need to vote. If passed by the Senate, it will head to Governor Perry’s desk for a signature. Perry has promised to sign the bill into law if it reaches his desk.
