Organ Recipient Dies of Transplanted Rabies

    Rabies

The CDC says it’s an extremely rare case: Rabies has been passed from an organ donor to the transplant recipient, who has died.

FOX News Radio’s Courtney Kealy has the story:

Maryland officials began the investigation and identified the possibility of transplant-related transmission of rabies.  The tests coming back after the CDC conducted lab analysis indicating the organ recipient and organ donor both had the same type of raccoon-type rabies virus.

The organs were donated in 2011 after the donor died in a Florida health care facility.  Rabies was not suspected as the cause and no testing was performed at the time.
