CDC: Cholesterol Levels Dropping in America

Here’s some good medical news for you: A new study in the latest edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that Americans are doing a better job taking care of their cholesterol.

FOX News Radio’s Chris Hoenig has details:

The Centers for Disease Control finding cholesterol levels in Americans are improving in almost every way over the past two decades.  Since 1988, the total cholesterol has fallen from an average of 206 to 196.

(Carroll) “We found that the bad cholesterol also declined and that the good cholesterol increased.”

The CDC’s Margaret Carroll says the changes are happening for virtually everyone.

(Carroll) “There was progress both for men and for women, and for all ethnicity groups.”

Five times more people are using cholesterol-lowering drugs than in ’88, but the numbers have improved for those NOT using medications.  Fewer smokers and healthier diets are cited as reasons.
