The Rising Tide of Detergent Thefts

Detergent has become a hot commodity among thieves these days.

FOX News Radio’s Jennifer Keiper has more on the motive behind this sudsy caper:

A Minneapolis area man is caught on a Walmart camera putting bottle after bottle of Tide laundry detergent into his shopping cart, and walking right out of the place without paying. More security tapes show it isn’t his first time doing it. Tide can run anywhere from five bucks to almost $20 dollars and West St. Paul Police Investigator Sean Melville says on the black market, it can go for half that price.

Melville: “There will be a certain amount of people that he’s selling to directly and they know a couple of friends they’ll say hey if you need Tide, you know, call me or call my guy and he’ll give it to you for a discount, and the rest he’s going to be selling to mom and pop stores.”

Police in other states have seen the same problem with Tide disappearing from store shelves.
