Shark Attack Report Issues Warning To Vacationers

A new report on 2011 shark attacks from the University of Florida delivers a mixed bag of information.  It includes a warning to the adventurous vacationer: if you want to swim with the fishes, you might not want to travel too far off the beaten path.

FOX News Radio’s Chris Hoenig has details:

The report from the Florida Program for Shark Research has good news.

(Burgess) “There were no fatalities anywhere in the United States.”

    …and bad news.

(Burgess) “The fatality rate outside the U.S. was 25%, which was very high.”

Program Director George Burgess says 12 people died from shark attacks in 2011, mostly in remote areas.

(Burgess) “Small islands in the western Indian Ocean.”

…places like Reunion and the Seychelles, that lack advanced medical care.  Back Stateside, attacks in general were down.

(Burgess) “The 29 attacks that occurred in the United States were the lowest total since 1998.”

The most dangerous waters: the coasts of Florida and North Carolina.
