From Sinus Infection to Brain-Eating Amoeba: Neti Pot Dangers
There are new warnings for those who turn to a popular product to help provide sinus relief.
FOX News Radio’s Chris Hoenig reports:
When you get all stuffed up, doctors recommend neti pots to help.
(Commercial) “It’s a way to wash the drainage and congestion right out of your nose. It only takes a minute, and I can use it as often as I need it.”
But two people in Louisiana are dead after contracting brain-eating amoeba from the teapot-like devices. State health officials say it’s not the pots that are the problem, but what you put in them, and, subsequently, your nose.
Manufacturers recommend using distilled water – NOT tap water – and frequently cleaning the pot with warm water and antibacterial soap.
