Illinois Town Hopes to Carve a Place in History

It’s a week away from halloween, and the town of Highwood, IL — population 5,000 — is getting in the spirit early. The town is hoping to carve a place in the Guiness Book of World Records for the most lighted Jack-O-Lanterns in one place.

Many of the children — like Matthew Sanford — came to the Great Highwood Pumpkin Carving Festival ready to demonstrate their artistry:

Boston has long held the title with more than 30,000 Jack-O-Lanterns, but it looks like Highwood may take the title with nearly 31,000. The pumpkins won’t go to waste either… they’ll be transported to Northern Illinois to be fed to cows – who consider pumpkins a treat.
