Sprint Cup Series Returns… Drivers Eye Sonoma
The NASCAR Sprint Cup heads West to California’s Sonoma Raceway for this Sunday’s running of the Toyota Save Mart 350 and Chase Elliott gets some support from his dad this weekend.
FOX’s Marghiee Teshineh has “FOX in the Fastlane”:
It’s time for the first road course race of the season and A.J. Allmendinger says Sonoma’s track has a dual personality:
(Allmendinger) “Sonoma is like a short track. The top speeds aren’t very high. There’s not a lot of aerodynamics, although there are still key, no matter what race track you go to now, aerodynamics are important.”
The California native considers Sonoma his home track, but Allmendinger says winning there is never easy:
(Allmendinger) “It’s a tough race on equipment, on strategy, on the crew chief, on the driver, so pit stops are important. So there’s a lot that goes on with that race.”
Kyle Busch won at Sonoma last year and said strategy plays a big part in taming the road course:
(Busch) “Track position means a lot there, you know I remember last year we came in got tires restarted eighth and made our way to the front because a bunch of guys had old tires.”
Chase Elliot gets a little help from his dad, NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliot, who will be acting as son’s second spotter this weekend.
