Closing Guantanamo Bay Completely?… Report Says Not Just Yet

The Obama Administration is reportedly not pursuing the use of an executive order to shutter the Guantanamo Bay military prison.

FOX’s Jon Decker has more from the White House:

The President is eager to fulfill his 2008 campaign pledge to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay. But Reuters is reporting that senior White House officials have concluded that they lack a strong legal position to do so by executive order.

Without executive action, the chances of closing the prison would hinge on convincing a skeptical Republican-led Congress to overturn its long-standing ban on bringing the remaining prisoners to maximum-security prisons in the U.S.

The number of detainees at Guantanamo now stands at 80, the lowest since it was opened.
