House Blocks Confederate Flags at V.A. Cemeteries

The battle over a piece of American history that some find offensive (and others consider an important part of their history) was fought in Congress Thursday. And the confederate flag ban, that set off a fierce fight last year, easily wins House approval.

FOX’s Jared Halpern has more from Capitol Hill:

Displaying the Confederate flag at Veterans Administration cemeteries has been blocked by the House. The 265-159 vote means descendants of Confederate veterans cannot fly the battle flag over mass graves, even on days flag displays are allowed.

84 Republicans, including top GOP leaders, supported the amendment authored by California Democrat Jared Huffman, as part of a broader military spending bill.

A similar effort last year sparked backlash from Southern Republicans and was ultimately scrapped by GOP leaders.
