House Approves $622M Bill to Help Fight Zika Virus – Less Than the Senate’s Bill
The Centers for Disease Control is disappointed in a Zika funding bill passed by the House, saying “it’s just not enough” to combat the threat of the mosquito-borne virus.
FOX’s Rachel Sutherland reports from Washington:
In spite of a vote threat, the House passed a Zika funding bill:
(House) “On this vote the yays are 241, the nays are 184. The bill is passed, without objection, the motion to reconsider is laid on the table.”
The $622-million package is a fraction of the $1.9 billion the White House asked for. House Republican Tom Cole argued that Congress should use reallocated funds:
(Cole) ”I think rather than get stampeded, and add $2 billion to the national debt, let’s use the funds we have.”
The passage of the House bill sets up negotiations with the Senate, which has advanced a much larger, $1.1 billion package.
