The Real Don Draper, Bill Backer, Dead at 89
Bill Backer, the real Don Draper has died. Backer created the ads that proliferated television in the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s.
FOX’s Michelle Pollino reports:
Bill Backer, the guy who created the ad “Coke is the real thing,” has died at the age of 89:
(Coke Commercial) “I’d like to teach the world to sing, sing with me.”
Backer was also the inspiration for AMC’s “Mad Men” character Don Draper. If you were a kid in the late 70’s and 80’s, than you heard Backer’s work, which included Miller Lite it was “everything you ever wanted in a beer and less”:
(Campbell’s Soup Commercial) “Look what it says in this magazine, it says what I always knew, ‘soup is good food.'”
It also asserted Campbell’s soup as good food and said that Löwenbräu was reserved for special people by saying, “here’s to good friends, tonight is kind of special.”
