Jahana Hayes of Waterbury, Connecticut, Named National Teacher of the Year

Connecticut’s Teacher of the Year has been named the National Teacher of the Year.

FOX’s Anna Welles has the story:

John F. Kennedy high school history teacher Jahana Hayes grew up in a Waterbury housing project surrounded by drugs, poverty and violence.

She became a teenage mother when she was in high school. Speaking in October, Hayes says she overcame those obstacles with the help of her own teachers:

(Hayes) “There was Doctor Burt Saxson, my amazing mentor and college professor, who himself was a Connecticut teacher of the year and taught me the value of making personal connections with my students before any real learning could occur. I could think of a dozen teachers just like them.”

The 44-year-old will be recognized by President Obama at a White House ceremony on Tuesday.
