Where the Summer Olympic Flame Will Burn Remains a Mystery

A break from tradition at this summer’s Olympic games.

The Olympic flame will not burn at a stadium during this summer’s games in Rio de Janeiro. Instead, the cauldron will live somewhere in the city’s downtown, exactly where remains a secret.

The opening ceremonies on August 5 take place at the iconic Maracana Stadium, but unlike most games, that will not be the sole, primary stadium.

The Maracana will host the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as soccer, while track and field takes place at the Olympic Stadium, across town.

The off-site solution is surprising: Tourists rarely visit downtown Rio, which is far from the well-known Copacabana Beach in the south, and the Olympic Park in the western part of the city.
