New Jersey State Lawmaker Proposing Fines for Texting While Walking
We all know it’s illegal to text while driving. But if one state lawmaker has her way, it’ll be against the law to text while walking in New Jersey.
FOX’s John Saucier reports:
The proposed legislation prompted by a William Patterson University study of people distracted by their smart phones while walking:
(Dr. Basch) “We observed around 20,000 pedestrians and what we found was that about 1/3 of pedestrians were distracted when crossing on the walk signal. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, we found that nearly 40% were distracted on a don’t walk signal, so that would be darting out in the street.”
That’s study author Dr. Corey Basch. The bill, sponsored by Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt, would impose a $50 fine for texting while walking.
