United States and Cuba Reach Agreement to Allow Direct Flights

U.S. Airlines will soon start making direct, scheduled flight to and from destination in Cuba. Both the U.S. and Cuba reached a new agreement to allow the flights, which will be the first in more than a half a century.

Governments of both the U.S. and Cuba signed a new agreement re-establishing regularly scheduled air travel between both nations, and already the Federal Department of Transportation is opening up applications for U.S. based air carriers, both for passengers and cargo, to obtain necessary permission to begin regular flights.

A statement from American Airlines says the company will file their application very shortly. Up until this time, most people traveling from the U.S. to Cuba relied on charter service. Travel restrictions on U.S. citizens still apply.
