Happy Birthday Song Can Be Used by Anyone

The most famous song in the world is finally entering public domain.

FOX’s Michelle Pollino reports:

(Minions) “Happy Birthday to you…”

And now the Minions can sing ‘Happy Birthday’ all they want and not pay royalties, as the music publisher Warner/Chappell agreed in court papers to settle a class action lawsuit over ‘Happy Birthday to You,’ a song to which it had claimed to own the copyright for, for decades.

They will have to pay the defendants $14-million and release the song into the public domain, which means anyone can use the song. In the lawsuit the plaintiffs say the song that they own is actually ‘Good Morning To You.’

Over time the lyrics were changed to “Happy Birthday,” but they never owned the copyright for the lyrics just the music.
