The United States and Syria Have Reportedly Been in Talks for Years
As the international effort continues to end a civil war in Syria, a new report says the U.S. has secretly been in talks with the Syrian regime for years.
FOX’s Rachel Sutherland reports from Washington:
Washington and Damascus reportedly engaged in clandestine communications in an effort to end Syria’s civil war and get President Bashar al-Assad to step down…
The Wall Street Journal reports the White House secretly corresponded with members of the Syrian regime for years, but efforts were extremely limited…
Sometimes, senior U.S. and Syrian officials would speak directly to each other… Other times, they would speak through intermediaries such as Russia and Iran… Assad also tried to reach out to the U.S. to entice them to join what he described as Syria’s fight against terrorism.
