An American soldier is dead in an operation to rescue hostages from ISIS in Iraq.

FOX News Radio’s Jon Decker reports from the White House:

The Pentagon has confirmed that an overnight hostage rescue mission in Iraq has resulted in one dead American soldier – the first American soldier killed in action in Iraq since 2011.

The overnight raid at an ISIS prison in northern Iraq near Tikrit involved the rescue of over 70 hostages – most from Iraqi security forces.

A senior defense officials says US rescue forces moved in when it was apparent that ISIS hostage takers were planning to kill the hostages.

Ten ISIS hostage takers were also killed during the raid.
