Duke Cancels Plan To Broadcast Muslim Call To Prayer
Duke University has canceled its plan to broadcast the Muslim call to prayer.
FOX News Radio’s Tonya J. Powers explains why.
The decision not to use Duke’s iconic chapel tower to broadcast a call to prayer for the school’s Muslim community came after a flood of emails, phone calls, and even security concerns.
The original plan was to have Muslim Student Association members read an amplified call from the tower each Friday.
Some students still support the idea.
(Duke Student): “Every religion has had ups and downs. Every religion has had violence associated with their history. This is what we’re taught — to embrace diversity.”
Evangelist Franklin Graham had urged Duke alumni to withhold support because of violence against Christians he attributed to Muslims. Duke was founded by Methodists and Quakers. Its divinity school has ties to the United Methodist Church.
