WHO Sheds Light On Global Suicide Problem
The World Health Organization reports more people die from suicide than from wars and natural disasters combined. A new report finds more than 800,000 people die by suicide every year-around one person every 40 seconds.
FOX News Radio’s Kate Alexander reports:
The WHO reports more men globally commit suicide than women. In richer countries, three times as many men die by suicide than women. Mental health expert, Alexandra Fleischmann says celebrity suicides, such as Robin Williams, can provoke copycat behavior.
(Fleischmann) “We do know that there’s an association between how suicides are reported in the media and acts that are committed thereafter.”
Fleischman says suicide shouldn’t be glamorized or sensationalized in the media because of the imitation that can follow.
