UPDATE: Officials have revised the death toll to 298.

UPDATE:  A Senior U.S. official confirms to FOX News a “Buk” surface-to-air missile brought down the Malaysian plane– MH17.

FOX’s Jennifer Griffin reports from Washington DC:

Senior Pentagon sources do confirm to FOX News that in fact, it was a ‘buk’ missile that brought down the Malaysian flight. They cannot rule out that the missile was fired from the Russian side of the border nor can these Pentagon sources rule out that it was fired by the Ukraine government, though all eyes right now are on those rebel forces, the separatist forces in Eastern Ukraine.

FOX News Radio’s Simon Owen has more on the downed plane:

And that its last-known position was over Ukraine. It’s a Boeing 777.

An adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Minister says 295 people were on board. With Russia’s Interfax news agency quoting an aviation source as saying the plane was shot down by a ground-to-air missile. Interfax also quoting a Ukrainian government source suggesting that missile was fired by pro-Russian separatists.

This – in the volatile region of Donetsk — the heart of the ongoing unrest in Ukraine.

Malaysia Airlines saw tragedy earlier this year, in March, when Flight 370, which was also a Boeing 777, disappeared. It has not been found.

FOX News Radio’s Alastair Wanklyn reports:

The Prime Minister of Malaysia — he’s shocked by the reports that another Malaysia Airlines plane has crashed. He says “We are launching an immediate investigation.”

Now, the criticism last time was that Malaysia was unable to foresee how it should deal with an investigation of this magnitude. For the families, weeks went by without very much concrete information and ultimately it didn’t really come from the Malaysian side at all; it came from a British satellite company.

Their criticism was Malaysia was unprepared. This time around, perhaps, Malaysia is going to be quicker off the mark.

FOX News Radio’s Jessica Golloher reports from the airport in Kiev, Ukraine:

I’m sitting here in the Kiev airport and a lot of people having been talking about it — just shaking their heads. It is not a good situation. People are very upset. They just want the violence in their country to end and they quite frankly thought that Ukraine had, or at least the government forces had, taken over the rebel-held cities and things would get back to normal eventually with the new President they had a new hope for the future and things basically moving on the right way. So a lot of sadness here today.
