FOX Wheels: America’s Big Pothole Problem

If you’ve been navigating the bumpy roads of life lately, you’re not alone. Potholes are popping up across the country thanks to the Winter that just won’t quit.

FOX News Radio’s Jennifer Keiper with our weekly look at things with wheels, “FOX Wheels“:

For many of us, Winter has been nothing but extreme cold, ice, snow — and now a lot of potholes. From New Jersey:

Driver: “Passenger side– whole front end went in”

To Vermont, Delaware and here in Chicago:

Driver: “They need some work on these highways. They need work everywhere.”

Some cities have added pothole crews — called them up earlier than usual, or only patch the worst holes. Transportation expert Stephen Schlickman with the University of Illinois at Chicago says:

Schlickman: “Undoubtedly, our roads are taking a beating.”

And Schlickman says, it’s going to take millions of dollars to fix roads.

Schlickman: “We could use better construction material, but that comes at a premium. We could also replace the worst roads.”

But, again that costs a lot of money and many states are struggling financially. So what can you do? Some cities have websites where you can report potholes. No spacing out while driving — and keep in mind that the pool of water you see ahead, may be hiding a pretty big hole. And it probably wouldn’t hurt to have a good tire and suspension shop in mind.
